On 24th February, MPL hosted its second client seminar of 2011. MPL Managing Director, Aidan Vaughan, presented on Inheritance Taxation solutions and Simon Weighell, Senior Investment Manager, put forward the investment case for commodities. There were also contributions from MPL Directors Mark Kitson and Jim Spicer who updated clients on the performance of the MPL Discretionary Management Service and pension changes respectively. Following the educational content, clients enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal, also at the Montague Hotel in Bloomsbury.

It is with great regret that MPL announce the death of Dominik Wyhowski on the 15th January 2011 following a courageous battle with cancer. Dominik was a founder partner of MPL and gave so much of himself to the business and to his clients. Dominik retired last year and will be sadly missed by all. Our condolences to Frances and all the family. His funeral will be held at 2pm on 24th January, Holy Trinity Church, Sloan Square, London. All his many friends are welcome.

On 15th July MPL hosted a seminar, '50% tax, Pensions and Tax Planning Ideas' for finance professionals. MPL pensions specialist Jim Spicer summarised the punitive measures on larger pension contributions recently announced by HMRC . The freezing of the Life Time Allowance was also covered. A leading London and Isle of Man based tax planning consultancy then introduced Employee Benefit Trusts and several registered tax planning schemes.

It is with regret that MPL announce the death of Giles Rackham (44) on the 24th February 2009 from a heart attack. MPL is very grateful for the substantial contribution he made to the business, particularly in developing our Discretionary Management Service (DMS). His kindness, wit and commitment will be greatly missed by staff at MPL and doubtless many clients too. Full continuity of service and investment style is in place via Mark Kitson and the expanding DMS team.

MPL pensions specialist, Jim Spicer, has become aware of an urgent situation regarding the protection of tax free cash entitlements for large pensions (typically £1m or more). Jim has seen many certificates that don't offer the full protection and is offering a review to mitigate against a potential tax liability. The deadline for review is 5th April 2009. Congratulations to MPL Annuity Director, Billy Burrows, who has won 'Personality of the Year' at the 2008 Scottish Widows awards ceremony which recognises success and achievement in the financial adviser community. Billy won the award for his commentary on the annuity market, variable and ‘third way’ annuities, a very topical subject which Billy has made his own. The award was presented by Olympic Ambassadors Roger Black MBE and Sarah Bailey MBE.

On March 10th MPL held a seminar on the exporting of pension benefits. The ROSIIP (under QROPS legislation) is a scheme specifically designed to enable non UK resident individuals who have accrued pension benefits in the UK to transfer these out once they have left the UK.
